TTC Special: Pandemic: World tourism is getting closer to recovery in 2023 but without leaving caution behind

by Frank Martin In 2023, gradually and visibly, the global tourism industry is moving further and further away from the destructive coronavirus pandemic. And this occurs without the eliminating by the international leisure industry  of certain preventive measures and epidemiological surveillance that can avoid catastrophic returns. On January 30, the International Health Regulations Emergency Committee (IHR - 2005) on the pandemic issued a report recommending that the Covid-19 epidemy partially continue to be a public health emergency of international concern. The suggestion did not fall on deaf ears. Although no proposals for extraordinary action were made, the Director General of the World Health Organization, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, accepted the Committee's point of view. The global public health media also advise caution in this regard. And warned that the Covid-19 could be at a time of the so-called transition. World health bodies and those dealing with tourism made similar observations without [...]

Caribbean sees jump in visitors since pandemic began

Tourists flocked to the Caribbean last year in numbers not seen since the pandemic began, with the Dutch Caribbean and U.S. territories like Puerto Rico surpassing even pre-pandemic visitor arrivals, officials said this month. More than 28 million people visited the region in 2022, a more than 50% jump compared with the previous year, according to the Caribbean Tourism Organization. “It’s clearly apparent that even in the face of the devastating blows delivered by the pandemic, as a region, we have responded with hope, strength and determination to prevail,” Kenneth Bryan, the organization’s chairman, said during a news conference in Barbados. The U.S. market drove more than 50% of arrivals to the region last year with 14.6 million U.S. tourists visiting — three million more than the previous year. Meanwhile, the number of European visitors nearly doubled to 5.2 million. Visits from Canadians, though, did not rebound as expected, with some [...]

It’s official: Cuba had received 489,000 in January-February 2023

Tourist in Cuba. Image: Pixabay Cuba had received 489,000 foreign tourists in the first two months of the year an official press report indicated. Cuban digital magazine Cubadebate reported that the recovery of Canadian tourism, Cuba’s major tourist-sending market, reached 80 percent with respect to 2019, totaling 252,650 travelers. The article added that 67.2 percent of the accumulated total of international tourist arrivals is represented by three markets: Canada, Cubans living abroad (51,187) and the United States (24,451). Arrivals from the traditional European markets maintain low figures due to the non-recovery of long-distance trips from that continent and the insufficiency of air connections. In that area, the United Kingdom (13,596), Germany (13,585), France (13,103), Italy (11,373), Spain (10,613) and Russia (20,589) top the list of Cuba’s major tourist-sending markets. Arrivals by sea lack significance, the article said, with 12,180 visitors (3,794 crew members), as a result of restrictions from [...]

TTC Special: Accurate Climate Measurements is Crucial for Global Tourism

TTC Special: Accurate Climate Measurements is Crucial for Global Tourism. Image: Pixabay In-depth knowledge and protection of the climate based on rigorous measurements is already essential for human life and within this framework it is increasingly crucial for the world tourism industry. This is the reason why the World Tourism Organization dedicates more and more time, patience and money to show that applies the so-called ecological, environmental sustainability, as a vital necessity. The meaning of this certainty can be found in any scientific dictionary: it is not just about ensuring economic development, according to social aspects and environmental protection. It also means the future of humanity. Explained a little more broadly, a normal situation is one that "can be sustained for a long time without depleting natural resources or causing serious damage to the environment." Clearly, measuring elements in the climate is a mechanism that can be used in [...]

Hackers attacked Costa Rica two billion times last year

In an average of more than five million vulnerability attempts per day, cyber attackers tried to compromise Costa Rican public and private computer systems at least two billion times in 2022, according to the specialized firm Fortinet. Despite this, our country is not on the podium of this study, which ranks Mexico as the most attacked country in Latin America, followed by Brazil and Colombia. Regionally, attempts to damage servers and endpoints totaled more than 360 billion last year. Among the most damaging techniques used by cybercriminals, is wiper malware, a class of malware intended to erase (wipe, hence the name) the hard drive of the computer it infects, which increased by more than 50%, while cybercriminal supply chains became more complex and sophisticated to counter defenses, the report added. Saint Lucia to Launch Digital Entry Form

Saint Lucia will introduce an online Embarkation/Disembarkation (ED) form government officials say will enable “even more seamless” electronic processing of travelers. The new ED form is part of a government initiative to digitize Saint Lucia’s public sector services “for the continued improvement of the island’s operational competencies and simplicity of conducting business,” officials said in a statement. Travelers boarding Saint Lucia-bound flights will not be required to complete the new electronic form. However, visitors who do complete the digital form will experience “swift processing” upon arrival, said officials. Saint Lucia press

Canada-DR open skies agreement will protect users from “unfair price increases”

The air transport or open skies agreement recently signed between Canada and the Dominican Republic is an “important step” in bilateral relations and will have a “direct impact” in several areas, such as a greater capacity to protect users from “unfair price increases,” said the Dominican ambassador to that country, Cohen reiterated some of the benefits that the agreement provides for both nations, including the release of air frequencies, the possibility of integrating new airlines, also grants air traffic rights, strengthening the commitment and guarantees of aircraft safety, better service, and ground handling for aircraft from or in transit to Canada. "Another of the benefits that the government has highlighted after the agreement is the reduction in the cost of airline flights, a statement that Cohen corroborates by assuring that “a greater supply… demand has to be incentivized in the reduction of prices,” he added. According to the diplomat, the agreement [...]
