Special TTC: How will Caribbean tourism fare in 2023 after a “not so bad” at all 2022?

by Frank Martin To forecast what will happen to the recovery of tourism in the Caribbean region in 2023, it might be useful to know what happened there in 2022. During the "old year", the region achieved a stable recovery despite the aftermath of the pandemic and the ongoing war in Europe. A good start for this type of analysis is knowing that, according to the Caribbean Development Bank, the reactivation of tourism in that part of the world in 2022 supports the forecast that the sector could grow 5.7% in 2023. Dominican Republic is a good example when comparing 2022 with 2023 The Dominican market reported 7.1 million tourist arrivals by air and around 1.3 million by cruise ships in 2022. The start of the new year has maintained positive momentum in that country and in other Caribbean countries towards full recovery after the pandemic. Another triumph in the face [...]

PJ urges Caribbean to help rebuild Africa’s tourism industry

Former Prime Minister P J Patterson has called on the Caribbean to offer training and technological support to African countries in helping to rebuild their tourism industry. Patterson was delivering the keynote address during day two of the Global Tourism Resilience Conference at the Regional Headquarters of The University of the West Indies, Mona, in St Andrew on Thursday. According to Patterson, the tourism industry has always been seized of the need of continuous training and retraining of the workforce to address the need of travellers. However, he noted that the COVID-19 pandemic has put an even greater pressure on the sector. “The industry experienced a heavy loss of workers during the extended period of lockdown and travel restrictions. The skill sets needed to push the industry forward require training quickly and intensively,” said Patterson. “Jamaica and the Caribbean have a strong history of developing institutions to train the workforce in [...]

Minister of Transport, Wayne Furbert, expressed “disappointment” with the looming suspension of American Airlines flights between Bermuda and Miami this summer. “We’ve held meetings with American Airlines to find alternative solutions. However, they have indicated that Bermuda is one of many markets in which they have been forced to reduce summer capacity,” said Furbert The Minister added that American Airlines indicated that the decision was based on flight crew availability constraints but the airlines said they intend to return to the Miami market in November 2023. “They feel that the Bermuda demand levels anticipated this summer can be accommodated on their Charlotte, New York and Philadelphia services,” Furbert noted. TTC Special: Alternative tourism boom

By Frank Martin Alternative tourism, a modality that some specialists describe as a "broad profile", has good forecasts for the coming years, the most important of which will grow by several million dollars until 2028, compared to 2023. Those who think so mention as a “positive” factor in this sense the possible good opportunity for both urban and social development that the situation could generate. According to experts, a more widespread alternative tourism implies advances in necessary but costly branches of society, such as education, social development and the creation of more jobs.
