TTC Special: Global tourism needed after the pandemic

by Frank Martin The first results in 2020 and 2021 about global pandemic over planetary tourism were described as extremely destructive. But as time goes by that definition has been changed to a more positive one: it has been a very hard lesson. According to the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), worldwide tourist arrivals fell 74% in 2020 compared to 2019 data. That was just the beginning. Analysts consulted by TTC affirm that global or integral tourist product is made up of the attractions of the area, its infrastructures, etc. Now, at the top of the agenda, are completely necessary local "recovery" studies. For this reason, and along the way, the industry is already immersed in a deep and fast transformation to adapt [...]

Special TTC: How will Caribbean tourism fare in 2023 after a “not so bad” at all 2022?

by Frank Martin To forecast what will happen to the recovery of tourism in the Caribbean region in 2023, it might be useful to know what happened there in 2022. During the "old year", the region achieved a stable recovery despite the aftermath of the pandemic and the ongoing war in Europe. A good start for this type of analysis is knowing that, according to the Caribbean Development Bank, the reactivation of tourism in that part of the world in 2022 supports the forecast that the sector could grow 5.7% in 2023. Dominican Republic is a good example when comparing 2022 with 2023 The Dominican market reported 7.1 million tourist arrivals by air and around 1.3 million by cruise ships in 2022. The start of the new year has maintained positive momentum in that country and in other Caribbean countries towards full recovery after the pandemic. Another triumph in the face [...]

PJ urges Caribbean to help rebuild Africa’s tourism industry

Former Prime Minister P J Patterson has called on the Caribbean to offer training and technological support to African countries in helping to rebuild their tourism industry. Patterson was delivering the keynote address during day two of the Global Tourism Resilience Conference at the Regional Headquarters of The University of the West Indies, Mona, in St Andrew on Thursday. According to Patterson, the tourism industry has always been seized of the need of continuous training and retraining of the workforce to address the need of travellers. However, he noted that the COVID-19 pandemic has put an even greater pressure on the sector. “The industry experienced a heavy loss of workers during the extended period of lockdown and travel restrictions. The skill sets needed to push the industry forward require training quickly and intensively,” said Patterson. “Jamaica and the Caribbean have a strong history of developing institutions to train the workforce in [...]
