World’s second largest cruise ship docks island of Cozumel

The island of Cozumel welcomed Royal Caribbean International’s Utopia of the Seas, the second largest cruise ship in the world. The vessel docked at the SSA Mexico terminal, one of the most modern and largest in the country.

Hailing from Port Canaveral, Florida, Utopia of the Seas sails under the flag of the Bahamas, part of Royal Caribbean International’s renowned Oasis class. The ship, which launched in July 2024, has a capacity for more than 7,000 passengers and nearly 2,300 crew members.

During the formal ceremony, Vagner Elbiorn Vega, the General Director of the Quintana Roo Comprehensive Port Authority (APIQROO), represented Governor Mara Lezama. He presented commemorative plaques as a symbol of welcome to the vessel’s captain, Ángel Oviol Ruiz, highlighting the importance of the ship’s arrival in strengthening tourism in the state.

In his message, Vagner Elbiorn highlighted that the arrival of Utopia of the Seas consolidates Cozumel as a key destination on global cruise routes, strengthening the local economy and generating new opportunities for Quintana Roo families.

The arrival of this vessel consolidates Cozumel’s status as one of the Caribbean’s most important ports for cruise tourism, generating significant economic benefits and promoting the destination’s sustainable development. Local port and tourism authorities welcomed the crew and visitors, highlighting the island’s hospitality and natural beauty.
