Barranquilla-Santiago de Cuba: New air route launches in July

A new direct flight route between Barranquilla and Santiago de Cuba will begin operations on July 3, coinciding with the start of the Caribbean Festival. This was announced by Cuban Tourism Minister Juan Carlos García Granda during a meeting with tour operators and aviation executives in Bogotá, Colombia.

When asked about the benefits of this connection, the minister emphasized the economic impact for both cities, “The real benefit we’re always seeking is economic. The flight demonstrates how there are still people with enthusiasm and knowledge of the country, in the Colombian market. I think they’ve made a commitment that has every chance of seeing gains. Directly connecting a city like Santiago de Cuba, with a culture, heritage and hospitable people like it has… We’re talking about something that can convey value and knowledge to Colombians themselves.” The route seeks to capitalize on the growing demand for short trips and authentic experiences between the two countries.

Regarding the recovery of the Cuban tourism sector after the pandemic, García Granda detailed the complex situation Cuba is facing, and stressed that the priority is to strengthen traditional markets such as Colombia, Mexico and Brazil to offset the decline in US visitors. Cuba received 1.2 million tourists in the first quarter of 2025 — 40% more than in 2024 — although still far from the pre-pandemic figure of 4 million. At the same time, Cuban authorities are seeking to attract visitors from distant markets such as Russia, China and Turkey.

The presentation in Colombia marks the beginning of a Latin American tour by the minister. The objective, he explained, is to, “strengthen alliances and jointly project the future of tourism in the region,” leveraging cultural and geographical synergies.

The announcement of the Barranquilla-Santiago flight reflects Cuba’s commitment to promoting the eastern part of the country as a tourist attraction.
