The preponderance of the Spanish hotel industry in the Caribbean maintains a similar rhythm to the previous annual exercises. Twenty-seven of the main Iberian hotel chains manage 280 hotels in the most important destinations in the region. Meliá, Iberostar, Riu, Barceló and Bahía Príncipe top the list – they manage 60% of that plant.
The Mexican Caribbean, the Dominican Republic and Cuba comprise about 91% of the hotels operated by the companies analyzed, also present, to a lesser extent, in Jamaica, Aruba, Bahamas, Puerto Rico and Haiti.
Four destinations account for 64% of these hotels: Riviera Maya (including Playa del Carmen) and Cancun, in the Mexican Caribbean; Punta Cana, in the Dominican Republic, and Varadero, in Cuba. They are followed by the number of hotels managed by Spanish chains: Havana and Cayos de Villa Clara, in Cuba; Santo Domingo and Puerto Plata, in the Dominican Republic; Montego Bay, in Jamaica, among others.
The sources used in this article are the websites of the Spanish groups that, in general, list their hotels according to the marketing schemes, as some of these data may differ from statistics based on other criteria.
