Guanahacabibes: Biodiverse, exuberant and unique

Guanahacabibes: Biodiverse, exuberant and unique Guanacabibes. Photo: Panchito González López The Guanahacabibes Peninsula is lies on the westernmost tip of Cuba, a region distinguished from the rest of the country considered one of the areas with the greatest biodiversity in both terrestrial and marine areas, and an exceptional location for ecotourism. About 130 kilometers from the city of Pinar del Río, those making the long journey are rewarded when they arrive, on contemplating the excellent degree of natural conservation, precisely due to the isolation of human communities and the fact that its population is only about 1,300 inhabitants spread across four locations. But the best way to enjoy a visit is with one of the experts from Guanahacabibes National Park. In our case, it was Mario Borrego, head of the Public Use and Environmental Education program. He briefly described the site as “a true natural treasure.” This is where [...]

Sargassum-free Cuban beaches: Caribbean havens with crystal-clear waters

Sargassum-free Cuban beaches: Caribbean havens with crystal-clear waters Photo: TTC. A collaboration by Rachell Cowan Canino As the Caribbean faces record-breaking sargassum seaweed accumulation, Cuba is emerging as a destination with preserved beaches where visitors can enjoy clear waters and golden sands without the threat of the pesky brown algae. Numerous coastlines in the western and central parts of the island maintain optimal conditions thanks to ocean currents and environmental management strategies. To understand this environmental phenomenon, it is important to highlight that the massive arrival of sargassum in the Caribbean is linked to climate change: rising ocean temperatures, altered currents, and nutrients derived from human activities. When these algae decompose, they generate hydrogen sulfide, which causes headaches, eye irritation, and impacts marine ecosystems. Countries like Mexico and the Dominican Republic have implemented containment barriers and intensive cleanup, but Cuba stands out for the stability of its beaches in [...]

TTC Special: Cruise tourism’s private islands

TTC Special: Cruise tourism’s private islands Cruise tourism’s private islands. Photo: Pixabay/chengtzf By: José Luis Perelló Cabrera The Caribbean Sea and its islands have become a main cruise area since the late 20th century. Its geographical structure allows short-distance navigation and visits to just over two dozen small island states and ports in its basin ― with a diversity of customs, languages and colonial roots ―, a veritable mosaic of cultures and nationalities. Together with these tourist attractions, the region is presented as a safe destination, free of terrorism and war conflicts. The proximity of the Caribbean to the United States and its temperate climate have been important factors in the growth of this industry in the region. By 2024, the Caribbean becomes the world’s most important cruise destination, with 45 percent global market share. Over the next five years, the incorporation of 72 new ships is expected, which [...]

TTC Special: World Tourism: A new bonanza approaching?

TTC Special: World Tourism: A new bonanza approaching? By Frank Martin A lucky number for world tourism may be 2023. In the  current year worldwide sector approaches the "peak" it reached in 2019, recovering step by step to the about 95% of the serious collapse caused by the pandemic. The analysis is from the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) which is based on an optimism that has been growing more and more rapidly since 2022 when the branch recovered no less than 22 million jobs. Statistics are crushing any tendency to pessimism. The forecast for the year to date is impressive: the sector is projected to reach $9.5 trillion, just 5% below pre-pandemic levels in 2019, when travel was at its highest. There are also 34 countries that have already exceeded 2019 levels. Another prediction with firm foundations for 2023 is that employment in the world tourism industry will have [...]
