Cuban lawyers take on the challenge of adapting to the new times

The most important meeting for lawyers in Cuba, the International Law Congress, closed its tenth edition with a call to professionals to adapt to the new times, because, “Changes are necessary for growth,” as noted by Lidia Montes de Oca Fernández, first vice president of the National Organization of Collective Law Firms.

In her closing remarks, the vice president highlighted the inclusion of a Trade Forum in the program of the event for the first time, which visualized the relations of legal professionals with the new economic actors in the country, as well as the relevance of the exchange of good practices and knowledge in the training of jurists.

Montes de Oca Fernández also highlighted the workshop on administrative management, which evaluated the potential of the legal profession to face new forms of service management and transform their working proactive for the benefit of clients.

According to her assessments, the debates in commissions, “characterized by the wealth of intelligence of moderators, lecturers, speakers and participants, left a mark on the minds and spirits of those present, providing outlines to continue perfecting the defense of the rights of individuals,” as well as the ethical procedure in the resolution of disputes in areas such as Commercial, Family and Civil Administrative Law.

“In times where new technology is imposed, where artificial intelligence has gone from being a distant idea to the present, new ways of solving conflicts arise, through alternatives, to contribute to human improvement and a culture of peace in our society,” the vice president explained, citing the example of Alicia, a Cuban proposal encompassing a working assistant for lawyers.

In her opinion, the International Law Congress Abogacía 2025 went beyond the presentation of results and research to include the huge community of lawyers, while she highlighted their resilience as offering the ability to cope with any adversity.
