An international celebration
World Tourism Day is celebrated every September 27, a date established by the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) in 1980 to highlight the importance of tourism and its impact on the global community. This year, the central theme is “Tourism and Peace,” underscoring how the industry not only drives economic development, but is also a powerful tool for fostering peace and understanding among nations.
Tourism has the power to bring people together, promote cultural exchange and reduce geopolitical tensions. In an increasingly divided world, the sector offers a unique opportunity to create lasting ties and foster international cooperation. This year, the official celebrations take place in Tbilisi, Georgia, where leaders and experts discuss strategies for using tourism as a catalyst for peace.
Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, highlighted in his message to mark the occasion: “Tourism brings people together. On this World Tourism Day, we reflect on the profound connection between tourism and peace. Sustainable tourism can transform communities – creating jobs, fostering inclusion and strengthening local economies. By valuing and preserving cultural and natural heritage, it can help reduce tensions and nurture peaceful coexistence.”
Meanwhile, Secretary-General of UNWTO, Zurab Pololikashvili, emphasized: “Tourism is way more than an economic driver; it is a powerful tool for fostering international understanding, cultural exchange, and global peace. In a world increasingly divided by geopolitical tensions, economic disparities, and cultural misunderstandings, tourism offers a unique avenue for bridging gaps and building lasting connections.”
Cuba: A peaceful destination
Cuba, with its rich history, vibrant culture and breathtaking landscapes, stands out as a destination that promotes tourism and peace. The island offers not only paradisiacal beaches and cities full of history, but also a unique experience of hospitality and human warmth. The Cubasol business group, an extra-hotel company, plays a crucial role in this effort.
Cubasol is dedicated to offering a wide range of services and experiences that highlight the best of Cuba. From cultural excursions to recreational activities, each is designed to showcase the island’s beauty and diversity, while fostering an atmosphere of peace and understanding. Options include visits to historical sites, outdoor activities, gastronomic delights and cultural events that allow visitors to immerse themselves in authentic Cuban life.
On this World Tourism Day, we celebrate not only the beauty of travel, but also the power of tourism to build a more peaceful and united world. Cuba, with its charm and hospitality, remains a beacon of hope and an example of how tourism can be a force for good.
